9 yrs - unbelievable...
I remember ET to be my 1st online shooter experience ever... I played RTCW single player campaign only several months later, so everything was completely new to me.
I believe my 1st approach was as an allied covop on grush... (can't think of a more n00bish approach from my present point of view ^^) and my effective survival time after exiting spawn (*wooooow, look what we've got here... awesome!!!) was exactly 4 seconds.
Fortunately I was able to raise this time to 10 seconds after the 1st week. ^^
aim? I don't think i had more than 4 hits in total in that week.
Nowadays my aim on good days is over 30% acc, (up to 39% when doped
) which is quite o.k. as to my nowadays more or less sporadic appearance on the servers.
Having absolved now about 40% of my internship, much more important to me right now is that my IRL aim of venous puncture has presently risen to 95% (and finally equals my ET-syringe aim \o ), making my patients (and myself) reeeeealy happy.
What I witnessed in the past 9 years was the graphic power becoming better and better in the shooters to come, but imho the team gameplay and fun aspect of the cartoon-like trickjump stunts performable on the q3 engine make ET unsurpassed.
Kinda unbelievable, isn't it? the gaming industry wasn't able to deliver something better in all this time.
Working at a universal hospital I see so many unpleasant views from time to time, so that I also prefer my shooters not to look too realistic. So I'm quite happy that ET has these cartoon-like characters, making the game a fun fragging experience rather than the die-hard military simulations like battlefield.
I also love to play it from time to time in my rather suicidical medic way, just doing crazy things I'd never try IRL, like knowing that I'll die in the opposing fire, but doing it with a smile on my lips because I just revived 4 or 5 injured teammates with 100% HP who immediately afterwards complete the mission
. - My teammates may forgive me my sometimes utterly crappy playing style, but goofing around online from time 2 time helps a lot in coping with real life harshnesses.
All in all I never would have imagined that it was possible to play the just 6 (sic!) maps of the original campign for almost a decade now, still discovering new angles and tactics and still having fun with it!
Maybe we should also participate in this poll that some hardcore gamers started, when they asked Splash Damage to rebuild ET with modern graphics but NOT TO ALTER ANYTHING in the game physics. Hopefully they give in if we reach the full decade of ET next year.
