If you are running Windows 2000 or XP. There is system log (in control panel, under administration tools) you can check what the reason of the reboot was. For what you told, its most likely that the system kernel crashed and forced a reboot (default on most windows 2000/xp machines, rather than just BSOD and halt the system).
The caused might be due to (defective) memory. You should runs a thorough memory test. Here is a good util for that purpose:

Oh, by the way: The 60sec reboot can even be forced by a conflict between xfire and servicepack 2 of windows xp.
So if u use xfire, that might be the problem. (only when u get the 60 sec message about rpc-server bla bla)

Ok, a few tips in the event it is a virus/worm/nasty etc....
you can try booting the pc into safe mode by pressing F8 when the system is booting up and selecting safe mode. Then run the antivirus program of your choice. This way can find virus that are otherwise hidden.
Also, you may want to turn off system restore if you find you have a virus so it does not get backed up with the rest of the system specs.
If its one of the mentioned virus, look for lsasss.exe in your TASK MANAGER. Notice it has 3 s and if I remember rightly it runs as a program run by you and not a system one.
If it is hardware, in my experience it could be bad memory or even the cpu.....so many different things sometimes. I repaired a pc a little while ago that seemed ok one second and rebooted for no reason the next. It did it more so when I was on the internet or more so when trying to download. It turned out to be the cpu. Memory seems to often give more errors than reboots but I have known it to cause reboots.
Also, I would not recommend AVG. I had to disinfect a pc that had AVG on it (free edition) and it said it had one virus. I then uninstalled that and put NOrton on it and it found 5 !!
Norton sorted out some , although it couldnt seem to shift all 5 , and I had to oink out the rest myself.
Hope all the info helps tessy
